Tree Services Northcote | Local Arborist Services Without the Drama
Need tree services in Northcote? Tomahawk Tree Services helps local homeowners and property owners sort out tricky trees, overgrown branches, stubborn stumps and vegetation that needs a proper plan.
Northcote is a compact inner suburb where trees and buildings are often in close proximity. Large mature trees sit right up against houses, fences and footpaths, and access through narrow side passages is the norm rather than the exception. Add in significant street trees, roots pushing into foundations and old-growth specimens that require careful assessment, and tree work here demands precision rather than brute force.
We provide tree removal, tree trimming, stump grinding, tree maintenance, tree cleanup and chipping and hedge maintenance across Northcote and nearby areas. Because Northcote sits within Darebin City Council, some tree work may need council advice or a permit before it begins. We can help you understand what needs checking before work starts.

Tree questions from arround
Northcote
Darebin City Council applies a Significant Landscape Overlay to large parts of Northcote, meaning trees meeting size thresholds require a planning permit. Council planners assess whether the grounds for removal are sufficient, taking into account the tree's health, significance, and what replacement planting is proposed. Refusals do happen, particularly for healthy trees with no structural issues. Understanding the process and having a strong application matters. We can help with documentation if you're going down that path.
Yes, and it's a genuine concern in Northcote's older streetscapes. Root systems from large trees in small yards can affect footings, drainage lines and paving over time. Whether management or removal is the right response depends on the tree species, root behaviour, and proximity to the structure. We can assess and advise on that specifically rather than giving a blanket recommendation.
It depends on its size. Jacarandas can reach significant dimensions, and if yours meets the SLO thresholds for trunk circumference and height, a permit will be required. If it's smaller, it may be exempt. We'd measure the tree and check the overlay for your address before giving you a definitive answer.
We apply for a council works permit to hold parking spaces in front of the property where needed, and we keep the footpath clear and safe while the job is running. We've worked in tight inner-city streets throughout Darebin and are used to working around parked cars, trams, and narrow traffic lanes.
